in a Global Mining Industry

by Dr Peter Shanahan

Dr Peter Shanahan

The 3rd Annual Mitsubishi Lecture was delivered by Dr Peter Shanahan on Thursday 11 May 2006 to an audience that included persons from a variety of backgrounds and professions who have an interest in the management of health in the workplace.

Dr Shanahan is well placed to speak on the topic as he is responsible as Vice President - Health in BHP Billiton for strategic developments and programs encompassing all aspects of health across the global operations of the company.

Like other "people issues" such as safety, the community and education & training, the health of its people is important to all organisations and hence management of health is increasingly being seen as key to a sustainable future whether it be a mining or other business, domestic-based or international.

Dr Shanahan discussed the myriad of issues and the strategies that are being implemented to improve the health of the people in BHP Billiton with flow on benefits to the local communities where it operates.
