MDP establishes an Education Fund at UNSW

Mr Itadani and Professor Hume

Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd (MDP) has established a new education fund with the School of Mining Engineering at the University of NSW.

At a recent ceremony held in conjunction with Kenneth Finlay Memorial Lecture, Mr Kenjiro Itadani, Managing Director of MDP, together with Professor Rory Hume, Vice-Chancellor of UNSW, signed a Memorandum of Understanding that established the fund in the presence of Mr Ikuo Kimura, Deputy Managing Director of Mitsubishi Australia Ltd, Ms Jane Bloomfield, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, representatives from the Australian mining industry and, student and staff from the School.

MDP has links with the Australian mining industry through a number of joint venture arrangements in mineral commodities including coal in New South Wales and Queensland.

The fund is intended to improve mining engineering education through:

  • an annual Mitsubishi Lecture Series on topics related to surface mining such as sustainability in mining and mine planning;
  • a Rural Scholarship for undergraduate study in mining engineering; and
  • a prize to final year undergraduate students on surface mining.
