New Mining Engineering program
to commence in 2006

Following 18 months of review, consultation and development, a new mining engineering program will be introduced in 2006.

Two key aspects of the new program are:

  • for first year students, the program offers a choice of enrolling either directly into the mining engineering program from the outset or, into a common stream of engineering courses that offers a wide range of electives. Either way, the new program provides students with the flexibility to change to their desired area of engineering discipline at the end of their first year.
  • Years 3 and 4 of the new program are based on the newly developed Minerals Education Australia (MEA) program. The program will be delivered concurrently at UNSW, UQ and Curtin starting in 2007.

The new flexible first year program caters for students who know exactly what engineering discipline they wish to pursue as well as for those undecided students who while interested in becoming a professional engineer are not quite sure which discipline to specialise in - at least at the commencement of their first year at university.

The MEA program specifically covers courses in Years 3 and 4 of the mining engineering program. The program is being developed in consultation with and the financial support of the Australian mining industry. This joint development has the twin goals of ensuring sustainable delivery of a high quality tertiary education program and a program that is attractive to prospective students to ensure a consistent large number of graduate engineers entering the industry.
