Richard and Robert are two high achieving students in Years 3 and 2 respectively of the mining engineering program at UNSW. They were recently congratulated by Dr Paul Hagan, Director - Undergraduate Studies in the School, on their achievements in being awarded industry-funded scholarships.

It was announced that Richard, who already holds a UNSW Co-op scholarship, has been awarded one of only two inaugural Sir Frank Espie - Rio Tinto Premium Scholarships. These are the two most prestigious scholarships amongst the 23 scholarships awarded to students by the AusIMM Education Endowment Fund.

Not to be left outdone, younger Robert has been awarded an Xstrata NQ Scholarship. While Xstrata Coal Australia has been a major provided of scholarship to students at UNSW, this is the first Xstrata scholarship that is specifically focused on the metalliferous sector.

Robert's scholarship includes provision for industrial training in Mount Isa at the end of Years 2 and 3 in his program. Robert, who has always wanted to be a mining engineer was “over the moon” at the support provided by Xstrata.

Associate Professor David Laurence, seen here presenting the Scholarship on behalf of Xstrata, thanked the company for its support which he stated was an acknowledgement by industry that UNSW is producing quality graduates for the metalliferous sector.

David pointed out that the majority of students graduating from the School in recent years had entered the metalliferous sector particularly in WA and Qld.
