Record entry into mining engineering postgraduate Program

The 2007 academic year commenced on a bright note for the School with record numbers of enrolments in all the mining engineering postgraduate programs including Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and the two Masters courses - Mine Geomechanics and Mining Industry Management.

Thirty four students attended the first course of the year - Mining Processes and Systems.

Students enrolled in the program are mostly from Australian mine sites including the Bowen Basin coal field, Mt. Isa, Olympic Dam, Pilbara and other parts of Western Australia, Orange, Parkes, Victoria and Tasmania. The programs also appeal to International students from South America, Indonesia, India and China.

Increase in enrolment appears to be driven by a number of factors but mostly by "word of mouth" from others who have completed the programs in recent years. It is also a good time for individuals on mine sites to be negotiating continuing professional development with their employers. Finally, with the current skills shortage in the industry, there is no time like the present to upgrade one's skills to facilitate career progression.
