New staff starting in 2006

Dr Glen Sharrock

Glenn Sharrock will join the School in the role of Senior Lecturer. Glen is a UNSW Mining Engineering alumnist (and former Co-Op student), graduating in 1993.  He completed a research Masters degree at UQ in 1997 and his PhD at UQ in 2003, at the time winning the UQ Dean's Award for Outstanding PhD.  His work at UQ was on dragline simulation studies, and then on rock mechanics particle code development.

Glen worked at Mt Isa Mines from 1999 to 2003 as a Rock Mechanics Engineer (George Fisher, Enterprise and Lead Mines), and since then has been a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with AMC Consultants in Perth, where his primary involvement has been in underground metalliferous mine studies (current operations and feasibilities) and ongoing research.

Glenn will bring to us a wealth of metalliferous geotechnical experience as well as strong research skills and will enable us to develop ongoing links with AMC in both consulting/education and research.

Mr Rudrajit Mitra (also known as "Rudra") hopes to be joining us in mid 2006 as a Lecturer, subject to both the timing of his PhD completion and final examination (due by April 2006), and also visa entry processes.

Rudra is a Mining Engineer with a Bachelors degree from India in 2001, followed by a Masters of Science from Penn State Uni, USA in 2003 and he is completing his PhD at Virginia Tech, USA.

Rudra's research area is geotechnical, primarily in coal, and numerical modelling.  He has held both Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant positions at both Penn State and Virginia Tech, with some teaching involvement in "Intro to Mining", "Rock Mechanics" and "Mine Ventilation" courses.

Dr Serkan Saydam

Dr Serkan Saydam will join UNSW as a Senior Lecturer, and is likely to commence in the middle of 2006, subject to visa processing.

Serkan is a Turkish national who is currently working in South Africa. He completed his undergraduate mining degree in Turkey in 1992, and then went on to complete a research Masters degree at the same university, followed by a PhD, completed in 2000.
His Masters topic was on reserve estimation and geostatistical methods.  His PhD was on open pit design and optimisation.

Throughout his research time in Turkey at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey he also worked as a research and teaching assistant in a number of fields including mining economics, rock mechanics, surveying, ventilation and computer applications.

From 2002 - 2003 he spent a year as a Postdoc Fellow at Uni of Witwatersrand, South Africa, working on research into thin sprayed liners for rock support.

In 2003 he joined De Beers in South Africa, with their R & D department, as a Project Manager and Mining Research Engineer, involved in sealant and sprayed liner studies; novel mining methods; and rapid tunnel development.

Apart from his research interests in hard rock geomechanics, Serkan will bring significant teaching support to us in the areas of mine economics; geostats and mine planning & design.
