Mitsubishi Corporation Suports Postgraduate Coursework

The School of Mining Engineering recently hosted a series of visits by senior personnel from Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd. The latest visit, on November 28, 2006 was by Mr Masaki Yamamoto, General Manager, Personnel Administration and Planning Unit, Metals Group in Tokyo and Mr Keima Fukuda and Mr Robert Campese from the Sydney office.

The outcome of the meeting was the announcement that Mitsubishi Corporation (Metals) intends to increase its educational sponsorship of its young professionals specifically in the Masters in Engineering Science (Mining Industry Management) program at the School.

The first student, Mr Masashi
(Mazza) Sekiguchi, will commence
his studies in February 2007.

Mr. Yamamoto indicated that his organisation intended to sponsor at least two Japanese students each year for the next 10 years.

Professor Bruce Hebblewhite, Head of School, in response to the above stated that he welcomes the support from Mitsubishi Corporation. He noted that the relationship has continued to grow since the establishment of the Mitsubishi Development endowment fund several years ago, which now provides valuable ongoing support to the School with undergraduate scholarships as well as the outfitting of a new advanced computing laboratory.
