UNSW at the 2003 Mining Games

Keen UNSW team members at the Mining Games

A contingent of students from UNSW Mining Engineering again undertook the annual trek north over the border to attend the Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (AusIMM) Young Leaders Conference followed by the Mining Games in Brisbane from April 30 to May 2. In all, twenty-six students drawn mainly from Years 3 and 4 attended the activities.

The theme of this year's conference was Technology in the Mining Industry with topics ranging from Virtual Reality to Sea-floor mining with a paper presented by one of the students from UNSW.

As always the social activities were a big part with a river cruise on the first night and an inspection of public houses on the second where the students were able to meet the other teams from around the country (and even Indonesia).

The Anglocoal Blue team a bit puffed after the hand mucking event
Emily excelled at the panning event
Three teams from UNSW competed in the games. Events included rail setting, drilling, mucking, vent bagging, face tie-in, timbering, crushing, gold panning, surveying and rock identification. Some of the events went better than others but all had fun and learnt a great deal.

In the individual events, Anglocoal Red and Anglocoal Black came first and third respectively in the timbering event with Anglocoal Blue achieving second place in the face tie-in and third in the rock drilling.

The UNSW teams showed promise with (plenty) of room for improvement. Overall, Anglocoal Blue ranked 10th out of the 21 teams which competed, Anglocoal Black 16th and Anglocoal Red 19th. A very good result considering the amount of training and state of some participants during the day!

Tim setting the team on the right path (?)
Surely this has been automated! - Anglocoal Blue sets the pace
Rebecca and Gerard working intensely in the Vent Bag event - a challenge for the Anglocoal Red team
The drilling event - always draws a big crowd
I wish I'd paid more attention in Stede's blasting classes - Anglcoal Black at the face tie-in event

The students wish to thank all those who supported them in attending the conference and the games, in particular their sponsors

  • Anglocoal;
  • P&H MinePro; and
  • UNSW School of Mining Engineering.
