Kolkata workshop
An overview of the Workshop

A/Prof David Laurence and New South Global were recently engaged by the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism (DRET) to organize and run a workshop on Mine Rehabilitation, Closure & Completion in Kolkata, India.

The Workshop was under the auspices of the Coal Mining Taskforce under the Asia Pacific Partnership (APP) of which Australia is of course a member. David also facilitated the workshop with Dr Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt from ANU. It was attended by around 100 of the most significant decision makers from Coal India and others in the Indian coal industry as well as Rio Tinto, Tata and other companies. International delegates from the other APP members including Australia, USA, Canada and Japan also attended as were international organisations such as the ICMM. The two day workshop was supplemented by a one day field trip to an open cast coal mine operated by a Coal India subsidiary. The workshop aimed to improve performance, strengthen partnerships and build capacity among the Taskforce member countries and highlighted and promoted the new Leading Practice in Sustainable Development in Mining booklets. Further information can be obtained from A/Prof David Laurence (d.laurence@unsw.edu.au)
