Bruce Hebblewhite and David Laurence recently presented a 4-day short course at the PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals operations at the Gosowong mine site on Halmahera Island, Indonesia.

The course, Mining Processes and Systems, is one of the core courses for the Graduate Diploma in Mining Engineering and the Masters in Mining Industry Management.

Eight students were enrolled in the short course delivered at the mine.

It was both cost and time efficient for Bruce and David to travel to the mine site rather than have the students come to Sydney for the otherwise one-week block-taught course.

The participants, who range from senior managers to geologists to surveyors and the presenters found the course mutually beneficial. Said David, “The course was set up to enable the participants to focus on the course content for 8 hours each day while still being able to carry out their duties at the mine site”.

A second course on risk and safety management will be run shortly with potential for others including environmental management, mine economics, mine feasibility, slope stability and so on. Apart from enrolled students, the courses are of benefit to both technical and non-technical mining staff.

Applications are invited from other potential students who are keen to upskill or refresh their skills in mining engineering.

Similarly, mine managers, particularly on remote sites, who may wish to develop the professional skills of their staff are invited to contact David Laurence at d.laurence@unsw.edu.au or +61 2 93854597
