Another milestone was achieved in the improvement program to teaching facilities within the School with the official opening of the Advanced Mining Computing Laboratory by Mr Soichi Tamara, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd (MDP), on Thursday 11 May 2006.

The official opening coincided with the 3rd Annual Mitsubishi Lecture which was delivered later that evening by Dr Shanahan in the NIDA Theatre.

These outcomes combined with the two new scholarships and student prizes which have been awarded each year for the past three years are a direct result of the establishment of the Mitsubishi Education Fund.

This is another example of the strong, long-term ties between industry and UNSW to ensure the long-term sustainability of minerals education and research in Australia.

The computing facilities are primarily dedicated for use by final year students in the mining engineering program having access to the latest mine design and engineering analysis software tools as currently used in industry.

The School would also like to thank the following organisations that have provided educational support in the form of software licences and training to students.

  • Maptek Pty Ltd for Vulcan mine design package
  • Surpac-Minex Group for the MINEX mine design package.
  • Runge for TALPAC and XPAC packages
