Spreading the Word throughout the World on Sustainable Mining Practices
A/Prof David Laurence was a guest speaker at the 1st. Mining and Community Livelihoods in Bangladesh Symposium, held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in April this year.

Organising Committee of the Symposium
David was invited to speak on Mining and the Triple Bottom Line and indicated to the 160 delegates that mining can be carried out responsibly even in environmentally and culturally sensitive areas, provided that sustainable mining practices are employed. The delegates included senior officials from Petrobangla, various government ministries, private mining houses, NGOs and the media. The symposium was prompted by the proposed development of large coal deposits at Phulbari and elsewhere in Bangladesh in the face of significant community concerns. Another Australian, Dr Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt, from ANU discussed how leading mining companies engage and empower communities in the development of mineral deposits in their local area.
