What Is Mining Engineering?

The variety of careers of UNSW graduates illustrates that there is much more to Mining Engineering than conducting mining operations and living in remote locations.

Mining Engineering is a gateway to one of the most diverse range of graduate career paths, offering very high salary levels and excellent opportunities for travel and career progression at a young age for both women and men. Graduates have the opportunity to work in a range of technical, management, financial, corporate and government fields.

In general, mining engineering is concerned with the safe, economic and environmentally responsible recovery, processing, marketing and financial management of mineral resources. In order to be able to undertake these tasks, mining engineers are required to have a broad education that incorporates aspects of many other disciplines. These disciplines include geology, civil and mechanical engineering, metallurgy, commerce, economics, management, law and information technology.

At UNSW, these disciplines are studied within a framework that encourages and facilitates problem solving, team work, initiative and leadership. It is the combination of these attributes that distinguishes mining engineers and results in them being versatile, one of the highest paid professions and in demand by other business sectors.
