Mining Engineers get top
engineering starting salaries in 2002

According to research by the Association for Professional Engineers, Scientists & Managers, Australia (APESMA), the average starting salary for Mining Engineering graduates was $52,584.

According to the 2002 APESMA Graduate Engineer Employment Survey, the next closest starting salary was just over $12,000 less for Computer Systems Engineers at $40,132.

The survey covered the field of engineering disciplines with the lowest average starting salary for engineering graduates at a level of $35,006.

Interestingly the survey also found that 14.3% of all Mining Engineering graduates from 2000 & 2001 Mining were female (or nearly 1 in 7 ) - this represents a significant proportion with some eventually becoming managers in what used to be considered a male dominated industry.

Full details on the survey can be obtained at APESMA Student Update website.

Note: the values presented in the survey are base salaries and do not include additional benefits such as superannuation.
