• Stability of deep open pits due to combined stress and geological structure effects (Cadia Project)

Underground Geomechanics

• Geomechanical performance of paste fill with respect to liquefaction potential, barricade design etc

• Dynamic ground control systems for rockburst/seismic active mining

• Airblasts and caving behaviour in underground voids and through muckpiles

• Development of improved thin surface liner (TSL) ground support systems

• Database of underground coal mine rock falls.

• Development/trialling of NDT bolt and anchorage integrity testing device.

• Mechanisms for large surface horizontal subsidence movements associated with steep terrain.

• Materials issues associated with improved cable bolts/tendons

• Anchorage and shear performance of cable tendons

Mining Methods

• Cavability assessment and face control – longwall top coal caving method for thick coal seams

Seabed Mining Systems

• Development of innovative mining and materials handling/control systems for mining of seabed massive sulphide (SMS) chimneys and mounds.
