There are a
large number of scholarships on offer to students
who wish to study Mining Engineering.
Most
scholarships tied to students studying at UNSW with funding provided by mining
organisations to ensure there are good quality graduates entering the minerals industry in future years.
Of the nearly 20 new scholarships awarded in 2006, the majority were provided to students enrolling in Year 1. Considering 53 students enrolled in Year 1, the chances of gaining a scholarship were quite favourable. There is a similar expectation for 2007.
While selection is largely based on demonstrated academic ability, account is also taken of the scholarship applicant's interest in the minerals industry, leadership potential and achievements/involvement in the broad spectrum of life skills, interests and activities.
In addition to the scholarships specific to the mining program, there is also an array of other scholarships open to all prospective students undertaking studies at UNSW.
The range of scholarships specific to mining engineering include:
The
UNSW Co-op Program. A scholarship offering
an equivalent stipend to the value of approximately
$13,400 (in 2006) per annum over the four years of the mining
program. In addition, the Co-op Program includes organised industrial
training during the summer vacation as well as personal
development courses such as leadership training. The
scholarship
program is supported by a number of organisations associated
with the Australia minerals
industry. In recent years up to seven new scholarships have been offered
to students enrolling in Year 1 of the program.
The
UNSW Faculty of Engineering Rural Scholarship Scheme. A
scholarship with a stipend to the value of approximately
$8,500 per annum over four years. The purpose
of the scholarship is to target students from non-metropolitan
areas and assist them with their living costs whilst
studying at UNSW. Several scholarships
are usually
offered
each
year with funding provided by the Faculty of Engineering,
the
School of Mining Engineering and several minerals industry organisations.
The
Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM). Several
scholarships are available from the AusIMM Education Endowment Fund (EEF) each year for students entering Year 3 of the Mining program. The EEF Scholarships are valued at $7,000 per annum for the final two years of study. In addition their is the prestigious Rio Tinto/Sir Frank Espie Scholarship valued at $12,000 per annum awarded to an outstanding applicant.
University of Newcastle Mining Engineering Transfer program - Roche Mining Scholarship. This
scholarship
is open to students who are currently enrolled
in the Mining Engineering Transfer Program
at
the
University of Newcastle and who intend to transfer
to UNSW to complete their final two years of studies in the Mining Engineering undergraduate degree program. The Roche Mining Scholarship is valued at $8,000 per annum.
Applications for most of these scholarships close on or around 30 September each year.
From time to time additional scholarships
become available and are offered to students enrolled
in the Program.
Some mining organisations
also offer scholarships directly to students who wish to minning engineering. These are managed directly by the organisations concerned. Some of these scholarship providers include:
