Dr Phil Sothard, Senior Research Fellow in the School and who is also Chairman of the International Mining VR Group, has in recent years been leading a research project team with industry funding involving Virtual Reality technologies.
The usefulness of this research is reflected in the recent signing of a multi-million dollar agreement between Coal Services and New South Innovations, the technology commercialisation division of UNSW.
The agreement provides for the supply of interactive group based virtual reality training scenarios for Coal Services that will add to its on-going drive for increased mine safety. More...

On 30th and 31st July, Dr Phil Stothard and Prof Bruce Hebblewhite attended an international workshop on development of VR technologies for the mining industry, organised by NIOSH in Pittsburgh, USA. The workshop included VR teams working in the US, Australia, UK, South Africa and Germany, and highlighted significant developments going on around the world, as well as opportunities for future collaboration and development of common protocols for sharing and interfacing VR modules from different developers.
A major part of the action plan developed at the workshop was the formation of a Mining VR Steering Committee to take a number of these issues forward.
Dr Phil Stothard was chosen as the inaugural Chair for this committee - recognition of the significant progress with VR being achieved at UNSW Mining Engineering, under Dr Stothard's leadership. It was also agreed that the next international mining VR workshop would be held at UNSW in 2008.

Bill Kellermann, an Adjunct Lecturer in the School passed away on 3 June 2006. Bill was well known to many students in the School if not for his engaging lectures on the design of materials haulage systems particularly using shafts but probably more so for his design of the aerial system which made Nikki Webster "fly" during the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney or the redevelopment of Scenic World, the cable car at Katoomba. Bill was of course involved in many other engineering feats during his long engineering career. The School is also well known to Bill as two of his sons, Adam and Michael, completed their studies in mining engineering at UNSW. Bill will be missed by all who came to know of him.
