On 18 July, 2005, 36 1first year mining engineering students embarked on a 5-day tour of mines in central west New South Wales.

The purpose of the trip was to expose the students to the breadth and diversity of Australia’s mining industry, and allow them to gain some first-hand insights into how the industry operates.

The students, together with three staff and three 4 th year students, visited the following operations:

  • Ulan Coal (underground, open-cut and washery) at Mudgee
  • Northparkes Mines (underground, open-cut, technical services and mill)
  • Cadia Valley Operations of Newcrest at Orange (Cadia Open-Cut, Ridgeway underground and mill).
  • The Australian Fossil and Minerals Museum in Bathurst (including the world-class Somerville minerals collection).

This provided the students with the opportunity to see coal and metalliferous mining – both underground and surface, in large scale, state of the art mining operations.

The students raised over $9,000 in sponsorship towards the cost of the trip which they undertook in their holiday period, prior to the start of Session 2. All agreed that the trip was a great success, and their knowledge and commitment to become mining engineers has been enhanced as a result. The financial support of the sponsors, and the cooperation from the mines involved, in hosting these visits, is greatly appreciated by the students and staff of the School.
