Year 1 Students Field Excursion

Only 4 weeks into their mining engineering studies and already the 1st year students have visited a working underground mine.

A field excursion was organised where the students visited either the Myuna, Awaba or Newstan Colliery on the NSW central coast, north of Sydney.

Whilst at the site, the students visited the working coal face and saw the mining equipment and people in action. Staff at the operations provided explanations and demonstrations on a wide range of mining engineering issues, such as how the tunnels are designed, supported and ventilated as well as the management structure at the mine.

The staff and students appreciate the support of Centennial Coal, the owner of these coal mines, in providing them this opportunity.

The photographs show students visiting Awaba Colliery in the company of the Mine Manager, Mick Cairney.
