For those students who do not have the level of assumed
knowledge in the sciences for the program there are supplementary courses offered dependent on a student's capability and circumstances.
Three
alternate pathways to the Standard Recommended Program are offered for consideration by students though there can be
various permutations of these options.
The alternate pathways encompass preparatory courses in maths and physics.
The aim of the alternate pathways is to prepare the student so that when they eventually enrol in the standard science course they will have a better understanding of the principles, concepts and problem-solving techniques. The benefit being the student has a better chance of passing the standard science course without failure and hence of completing the full program within the normal four year period.
All three options offer the student a better opportunity of commencing Year 2 of the standard mining program after one year.
All options will require the student to enrol in at least one course during the following Summer semester at the end of the first year. During which time the student may also consider enrolling concurrently in one or more General Education courses.
Option 1 - alternate Physics pathway
This pathway option offers enrolment in PHYS1111 Fundamentals of Physics, which has no assumed knowledge in Physics. This course is generally only offered in Session 1.
The student will enrol in PHYS1121 Physics 1A, the standard physics course, in the following Summer session.
Option 2 - alternate Mathematics pathway
This pathway option offers enrolment in MATH1011 General Mathematics 1B, which does NOT have an assumed knowledge in Maths Extension 1. This course is generally only offered in Session 1.
The student will enrol in MATH1131 Mathematics 1A, the standard maths course, in Session 2 and MATH1231 Mathematics 1B during the following Summer Session.
Option 3 - alternate Mathematics & Physics pathway
This pathway option offers enrolment in MATH1011 General Mathematics 1B, which does NOT have an assumed knowledge in Maths Extension 1. This course is generally only offered in Session 1.
The student will enrol in MATH1131 Mathematics 1A, the standard maths course, in Session 2.
During the following Summer Session the student will enrol in MATH1231 Mathematics 1B and PHYS1121 Physics 1A.
