Research Degree Opportunities

The School offers the research degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mining Engineering and Master of Engineering (ME) in Mining Engineering. These research degrees may be undertaken full-time within the school or externally by staff employed full time in the industry over a longer duration.

Research within the School of Mining Engineering is a major priority, with internationally recognised researchers involved in a broad research program focused on mining geomechanics and underground coal mining. This focus has now been broadened to all aspects of coal and metalliferous mining with an emphasis on mine safety, productivity, and environmental management. A major thrust in much of our research is the use of active mine site access for investigations and `laboratory' studies. The MCA initiative has resulted in UNSW being the home for the newly established Australian National Centre for Mine Ventilation, and plans are in progress for UNSW to be a core partner in a national centre for mining geomechanics research.

Two new innovative research fields recently entered include the application of virtual reality techniques for industry training and equipment operational simulation; and research into mining systems and environmental impacts of seabed mining.

The School of Mining Engineering has successfully attracted research funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC), the Joint Coal Board (JCB), the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and an increasing number of private company research contracts.

Postgraduates and research staff in the School come from many parts of the world, including China, India, the UK, South America, Turkey, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.
