2003 International Exchange

Lyle & Ben are all smiles about there trip os

Lyle (left) and Ben (right) will be heading overseas in the next few weeks for the start of the new academic year in the northern hemisphere. Both are in the third year of the mining engineering program at UNSW and have elected to join the International Exchange program.

Lyle has chosen to study at Queen's University in Canada while Ben chose Nottingham University in the UK - two of the universities with which the School has an agreement that allows for the exchange of undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as teaching and research staff.

In recent years, other destinations favoured by ours student have included the University of Alberta (Canada) and Lulea University (Sweden).

The School welcomes the recent arrival of four inbound students on the International Exchange program.Andreas (left) and Johannes (right) are final year students from the University of Leoben in Austria. The students are keen in studying some of the topic areas in which this School has particular strengths. Their visit to UNSW follows the visit from Leoben of four other students in recent years.

Professor Jim Galvin (UNSW) recently returned from Leoben where he spent several weeks as a Visiting Fellow presenting several lectures and participating in research activities as part of the Exchange Program.

Andreas & Johannes
Andrea from Chile

Andrea (left) is the third international student visiting the School. Andrea is enrolled in the third year of a five year mining engineering degree program at the University of Chile.Like Andreas and Johannes, Andrea has enrolled in three courses in the current academic session. As well as English, Andrea also speaks fluent German which made her an instant friend of Andreas and Johannes.

The fourth student is Yusuf whose home university is Harvard (USA). While Yusuf is reading an economics degree, he has decided to include some mining courses while at UNSW.

Students are encouraged to join the Exchange Program and given the the number of students who have partipated in recent years it seems to offer a lot of appeal. The mining industry has an international focus - with the major markets for many of our mineral commodities, equipment manufacturers and souce of funding - so it is not surprising that a large proportion of our graduates spend at least some part of their career working overseas (and some try to get a taste of that experience earlier than others).

Other universities that have an exchange agreement with the School are listed on our Links page. Further information on the International Exchange program at UNSW can be found at UNSW International Exchange.
