Boyd Assumes responsibility as ventilation officer

Boyd completed his secondary education in Lismore in 2000 and as a recipient of an Xstrata Coal Rural Scholarship; he commenced a study of mining engineering at the University of New South Wales in 2001. He completed his degree in 2004, receiving class 1 honours and also the Stan Sawyer Memorial Prize for best performance in an honours thesis.

While completing his degree, Boyd undertook vacation employment at two major Xstrata longwall mines. The first of these was West Wallsend in the Newcastle coal field and the second was Oaky No 1 in Central Queensland.

At West Wallsend, as part of the management team, he prepared standards and procedures for the Safety, Engineering and Operational departments and worked on several engineering projects. At Oaky No1 his role focussed primarily on ventilation, with some project work in gas drainage and strata control.

In recognition of his initial performance at West Wallsend Boyd was offered two years part time employment at the mine and in 2004 he was employed by the neighbouring Teralba Colliery to undertake ventilation network design, modelling and optimisation.

Boyd recently began a graduate program, working in the Technical Services Department at Newlands Southern underground coal mine in North Queensland. As part of the Xstrata Graduate program, his time has been planned to be spent in a variety of roles. These will include Underground Operator, Development Coordinator and undertaking project work.

Currently working in the field of ventilation, he will train to obtain his statutory qualification as a Ventilation Officer. During the graduate program he also aims to obtain his statutory qualification as an ERZ controller and in order to assist him to gain these qualifications he will complete mines rescue training.
